Seven Steps to a Spectacular Themed Tree ![]() Much like a garage, basement, or attic, a family Christmas tree will tend to get cluttered and jumbled over the course of a few years. So maybe it’s time to think about simplifying and creating a themed tree for Christmas. Although it is possible to pull together a theme all at once, it is more enjoyable, not to mention cost-effective, to let the process play itself out gradually, over time. Here are the seven steps to a stunningly beautiful themed Christmas tree: 1. Pick a theme and determine which colors will play a role. 2. Start with large floral stems to anchor the colors. For an average tree, you will need 12-24 stems. 3. Buy several boxes of large and small glass balls that complement the color story you have chosen. 4. Add feather birds to continue the color story, as well as add a natural element to your tree. 5. Include ribbons or bows for subtle accents. 6. Begin to search for ornaments to set the theme, with colors in concert with your other elements. If the ornaments are pricy, purchase only a few of each. If they really catch your eye, buy six to twelve of the same piece (for example, snowflakes, icicles, stars, etc.). 7. Purchase one-of-a-kind, featured ornaments as you come across them in your trips to Homestead Gardens.
