The key to a successful expansion outdoors is how you go about adding that extra room. One easy way to create alfresco living space is by finding a place for a small patio. Planning for this improvement starts with an attractive, durable surface. Flagstones are an option that’s both classic and cost effective, and they create a surface that blends well with any furniture style. Stone pavers of various types and recycled brick are other great surface options, and there are many wonderful patterns to choose from. Outdoor furniture is the next addition to your perfect outdoor room, starting with at least two cozy, comfortable chairs in a style that suits you. Add a small table for enjoying snacks and meals, and you have the furniture basics covered. Next, make sure you have adequate shade. Umbrellas are an easy solution — small umbrellas for bistro sets and larger, cantilevered umbrellas for bigger tables are functional and are available in endless colors and fabrics.
When it comes to adding plants, there are two options to consider, according to horticultural consultant Peter Vera: ground or container? If you’re planting in the ground be careful not to choose anything that will grow so big or tall that it encroaches on your sunlight. And if containers are your choice, Vera recommends choosing pots wisely. “If you have all kinds of weather, invest in high-fired pots that can stay out all year, and will last for many years as well,” he advises. Containers of colorful flowering plants are wonderful in an outdoor space. Accent them with some of the many plants with head-turning foliage. And consider plants that won’t quickly outgrow the patio space. Another easy option for adding greenery to your outdoor room is a trellis or arbor. “A plant like the sweet autumn clematis is low maintenance and can spread up to 30 feet in one season,” says Vera. For a burst of red blooms on your trellis, the Sun Parasol red Mandevilla is another good climber, but if you’re seeking a hardier climber, plant trumpet vine or honeysuckle. And if you’d like a privacy hedge, options include various forms of privet (Ligustrum), which are moderately fast-growing with many small leaves, or arborvitae, a broad needled upright evergreen. Creating an outdoor room is a project that will reward your efforts with years of enjoyment and added property value.
