The Golden Spades is a gardening group that meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 10:00 am, here at Homestead Gardens. Our purpose for meeting is nothing more than a regular time for our senior gardeners, age 55 and older, to come to Homestead Gardens for an hour time for a gardening seminar or workshop on a variety of gardening topics, sometimes a field trip. This is not a garden club. We do not charge any dues, require any community service of our members and take no roll. We send out a postcard or e-mail to each member, telling them of the coming month’s program. We want you to come as you like, and not to feel obligated to attend every meeting. We also provide each attendee with a discount coupon for a purchase at Homestead Gardens at every meeting.

“Restoring Your Battered Lawn”
The record heat of the summer of 2010 has left most of our lawns in a terrible condition. Weeds by the hundreds, patches of grass browned by fungus everywhere and the general burn-out from high heat and infrequent rains have left our lawns looking like scorched battlefields. But it’s now September and we can do all the things that are required to restore our lawns to good health and beauty.
Bring all you questions about fall lawn care and get answers to any other gardening questions to our next meeting. I hope to see all of you there.
Change in the Age Requirement for Golden Spades
When we began the Golden Spades group a few years ago, the age minimum was set at 55 years old. We set this minimum based on looking at what many local businesses used to qualify a person for their “senior citizens discounts.” Our own Senior Appreciation Days every Wednesday sets the minimum age for the senior discount at age 62. But 55 seemed appropriate at the time, so this is what it has been – until now.
Our group is one which receives much of its interesting nature and vitality from the members who attend and share their experience, as much as it does from the lectures. Many who wanted to attend were a bit younger than our minimum, but they were encouraged to sit in on our garden lectures. More than one have suggested that we lower the minimum age to 50, just like AARP. That would include them and many others who would be wonderful additions to our group, I’m sure.
So now we are extending an invitation to anyone age 50 or above to join us whenever they can come on the 1st Tuesday of each month to learn the many interesting practical and spiritual aspects of being in the garden.
