Featured Plant: Mandevilla (Dipladenia)
mandevilla.png
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Southeastern Brazil
Mandevilla is a tender, woody vine that provides nonstop blooms throughout the summer.
Fuzzy young stems twine around supports, eventually climbing to heights up to 10 feet. The handsome, leathery leaves are dark green, up to 8 inches long and 3 to 4 inches wide. Mandevilla is very fast growing. Parts of plant are poisonous if ingested.

Most species overwinter only in the tropical South. Up North, they can be grown indoors. They should be brought indoors before the first freeze and treated as a houseplant during the winter months. In the spring, Mandevilla can be returned outside after the last spring freeze or after the threat of freezing weather has passed. Mandevilla is great trellised in containers or in hanging baskets.

Indoors, Mandevillas need bright indirect sunlight. Provide temperatures of 60° or above. In spring and summer, feed every two weeks with a fertilizer high in phosphorus such as 10-20-10.

Outdoors, Mandevilla does well in light shade, but can tolerate direct sun.
Since 45° to 50° F is the minimum temperature that can be tolerated by Mandevilla, plants should be moved indoors for the winter. In late winter or early spring before growth begins, prune by removing old, crowded stems and shortening others.
