Winter Workshops

Don't let winter get to you. Use the down-time to hone your gardening skills and learn something new. Cover basics such as lawncare, pruning and planting. Or get how-tos on composting or choosing great-looking border plants. And for those with an eye for beauty can learn about orchids or plant a stunning indoor terrarium. Our workshops offer something for everyone at both our Davidsonville AND Severna Park locations!

Sidewalks, pathways, driveways, property lines…there are so many opportunities for creating living borders that add flair and definition to your yard. Whether to highlight a beautiful flagstone walkway, or to contain a meandering garden, we have easy and beautiful solutions.

Forest Gardens: Productive Ecosystems: $5

A forest garden can produce all kinds of foods including perennial herbs, vegetables, fruits and nuts. And they produce all these things while doing some incredible things for the ecosystem. Researcher, Lincoln Smith, will explore this fascinating world with you.

Gardening Done Right: Pruning: $5

Pruning is an intimidating garden chore and most folks are afraid to do it themselves. But you can relax a bit…it’s not as tricky as you think, but it is important that it is done correctly. Homestead Gardens’ Gene Sumi will share the tricks of the trade.

Ferns…Your Best Fronds: $5

Ferns are not flashy and don’t get the credit that they deserve. They bring grace and serenity to those shady areas and tolerate conditions that most plants won’t. Explore the best way to use ferns to get maximum impact in the landscape, including the use of some unique varieties.

“Starting Flowers and Vegetables from Seeds”

The creation of new plants from seeds is a special part of gardening at home. There are so many types and varieties of plants that you can grow from seeds available from local garden centers, on-line seed suppliers and from the seeds recovered from plants you have grown the previous year.

Our February meeting will focus on when and how to start new plants, starting with seed selection, germination and transplanting your seedling plants to the garden or containers.  As always, we want you to bring your questions and maybe a friend who might be interested in our topic.
